August 20th 2026Travel Plan
The Charles Dickens School Travel Plan sets out how the school will manage and improve travel to and from site for pupils, with a strong focus on safety, health and sustainability. Its aims are to reduce congestion and unsafe parking on Broadstairs Road by encouraging more pupils and staff to walk, cycle or use public transport, thereby reducing the reliance on car journeys.
Key improvements achieved by April 2026 include increasing pupil walking from 38% to 55%, increasing pupil cycle/scoot/skate from 12.3% to 15.8% pupil, increasing the use of the public bus from 7.5% to 11.5%, increasing the use of rail from 3.8% to 7.9% and increasing car share from 2.9% to 3.6%. Amongst pupils, 77% walk/cycle, 19.4% use public transport and 3.6% car share which means 93.8% of students are using eco-friendly methods of travel. In addition, the school aims to encourage greater uptake of electric vehicles among staff, supported by our new EV charging provision. Travel patterns are monitored through annual surveys, with data shared with staff and governors, and the plan reviewed annually to ensure it remains effective.
